Friday

19 September
Let’s make Friday night a Tango night.

Beginning the first Friday in October and running through to the end of November, the Tango Maestros of Johannesburg and Alchemy Health and Fitness Centre, invite you to join us for a series of classes for all levels!
…and then:

‘Practica’ the night away.

A ‘Practica’ is a practice session where dancers come together to socialise, practise their new moves, and meet other Tango dancers.

With this venture, we (the teachers) hope to grow and unite the community… but we can’t do it alone. We need the support of you – our community. So, help us make Friday night a Tango night in Johannesburg!
… and bring your friends along. We will have them dancing a tango in ‘no-time’.

Dancers who take classes with the Maestros will automatically gain entry to the Practica after the class. For those who just want to ‘practica’, the entry will be R30 person, and will start after the classes - at 9pm.

Emiliano will be taking Beginners through an 8 week course - guiding them to the fundamentals of leading and following from the heart/chest. (for more details see his flyer)
Emiliano: “My goal is to transfer the passion and respect for classic tango. In the end of the 8 lessons my students must be able to circulate in the dance floor environment without crashing into other couples, following the music and doing basic structures and combinations in classic style.”

Tango-Tensity (Bert and Lerato) will be taking intermediate students through an 8 week course – focusing on the communication between the partners. We explore what it is we are communicating; how we communicate; and the skills we use to communicate effectively. Mastery of the art of communication within our Tango, is an essential milestone on any Tango dancer’s path. (for more details see their flyer)

Sonia and Ralph – Primo Tango will come together for the first time - after a decade apart - to conduct 4 classes at Alchemy – aimed at the more advanced Tango dancers, who want to expand and improve on the structures and patterns they know. This class will be the re-uniting of old friends; and the exploring of new Tango moments. (for more details see their flyer)

Alchemy is a Martial Arts and Fitness centre that is opening its studios - and huge hall - to the Tango community, so that we can make Friday night a Tango night in Jozi. (address: Alchemy Health and Fitness Centre, cnr Lewisham and Beyers Naude Drive, Blackheath; near Cresta shopping centre)

All classes will run from 8pm to 9 pm on Friday nights – beginning the 3rd of October - followed by a ‘Practica’ till late.

For more details and prices of lessons and courses, please see the teachers’ flyers.
(Please note: Alchemy is a martial arts centre and does not have a bar facility. You are invited to bring your own snacks and refreshments to enjoy at the Practica.
There is a pizza restaurant and a steak house around the corner from Alchemy - for those who want to have a meal before or during the Practica.)

See you all on the dance floor soon!

20.30 TANGO SHOW – 7 classic tango songs
1 “Que importa” –(Who cares) Tango 1939– Music: R. Tanturi –
Lyrics: J. C. Thorry
This is the most popular version of this tango that was first recorded in 1939 by the Juan D’Arienzo orchestra (“El Rey del
Compàs”) and sung by Alberto Echagűe. The song tells the story of a young love that ends in heartbreak. The choreography is
based on milonguero style that is underscored by quick and sharp movements that characterises this style.
2 “Tristeza, Separaciòn” (Sadness – Separation)– Tango instrumental 1988 - Astor Piazzolla
This short piece of music is part of the soundtrack of the movie “Sur” directed by the Argentinian Fernando Solanas who won the
Palme d’or in Cannes. The film follows the journey of a political prisoner during the last Argentinian dictatorship (1976-1983)
until he goes home after his release. The choreography is done in a modern tango style and the interpretation is based on
s eparation and reconnection.
3 “E.G.B.” - Tango instrumental - 2006 - Javier Arias
This piece of music is part of the Orquesta Tipica Fervor deBuenos Aires repertoire, this is one of the most promising young
orchestras of the current landscape. The choreography is salonstyle characterised by elegance.
4 “Gloria” (Glory)– Tango – 1927 – Music: H. Canaro – Lyrics: A. Tagini.
This version is from the orchestra of Donato Racciatti accompanied by Nina Miranda. The song tells the story of a humble young lady who refuses the tentative advances of a wealthy man. She justifies her decision by explaining that the glory of true love is not found in material wealth but felt in the heart.
The choreography is a mix between milonguero and salon style and takes advantage of this unique piece of music that combines
quick movements and pauses.
5 “Romance de Barrio”( Neighbourhood’s Affair) – Vals – 1947 –
Music: A. Troilo – Lirics: H. Manzi.
This version is from the orchestra of Anibal Troilo with the voice of Floreal Ruiz. As typical of the traditions of Tango, this waltz
tells the story of the softer side of falling in love. It is the story of two young lovers, their feelings, the love letters, small quarrels
and secrets meetings.
The choreoghraphy is tango salon style and incorporates the sweet and romantic atmosphere of the song.
6 “La cumparsita” – Tango – 1916 – Music: G. Matos Rodriguez –
Lyrics: P. Contursi – E. Maroni.
This is perhaps the most well known tango in the world, performed in every tango show and in many movies including the
historical radio programme “War of the worlds” by Orson Welles.
This version is from the orchestra of Juan D’Arienzo and is one of the most popular interpretations of the many version of this
song. The choreography is done for classical stage performance.
7 “Silueta porteῆa” - Milonga -1946 – Music: N. Cuccaro – J.
Cuccaro – Lyrics: E. Nolli – O. D’Aniello.
